News of a brand new blog... The "Lighter Shade of Yellow" authored by Sasa Brkic - someone I've followed on Twitter for a long time and has now joined the blogger ranks.

His first post is an excellent introduction to using Lotus Quickr as a document management solution for smaller businesses or lighter requirements:
IBM Lotus Quickr is very capable of performing as a document management solution for SMBs. Stable, quick, customizable and with lots of integration options, its default setup has only one (potential) pitfall. Which one? Keep on reading...

What is the purpose of the document management systems (DMS)? Simply put:

* to allow access control,
* to simplify document search,
* to allow groups to work on the same document, while preventing conflicts arising from two or more people trying to alter a document at the same time,
* to provide means of versioning, meaning that system keeps older versions of the document, and
* to allow formal review and approval of documents.

Quickr is actually very good in each of these points. It is not perfect (e.g. one cannot save drafts, only versions of a document; review and approval functionality is rudimentary) but more than adequate for the needs of an SMB looking for a simple solution to start managing documents. And, in case you wonder: No, shared folders are not considered to be a document management system!

</center

Just spotted that the 'Detailed System Requirements' technotes for Lotus Quickr Services for Portal 8.1.1 (Quickr J2EE) on Windows and Linux have recently been updated:
This page describes the minimum product levels that need to be installed before opening a problem report with the IBM Lotus Quickr Support team. Because other products frequently ship fixes, updates, and new releases, testing every configuration is not possible. In general, you can install and run with updates to supported products if those updates are forward compatible.
There's a lot of information contained in these technotes, but in many ways, the most important detail is in the 'Required Details' footnotes. e.g. for Windows:
IBM Lotus Quickr on Microsoft Windows supports:

   * Microsoft Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition and Standard Edition with SP2 (Microsoft Windows product site)(See Required detail 1)
   * Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2 on 32-bit only (Microsoft Windows product site)(See Required detail 1)
   * Microsoft Windows XP Professional with SP2 on 32-bit only (Development platform only) (Microsoft Windows product site)(See Required detail 1)

--

Required details:
1. Bit-Architecture Supported: Lotus Quickr and WebSphere Application Server = 32-bit mode only; Operating System = 32-bit only.
The same applies for Linux right now, so if you want to install Quickr J2EE in a supported manner, it's strictly 32-bit OS and 32-bit WAS.

However, that's just one aspect of the requirements - if you're installing Quickr J2EE, do make sure you fully digest these technotes...

</center

Both the tuning and capacity are affected by many factors, including the workload scenario and the performance measurement environment. For tuning, the objective of this paper is not to recommend that you use the values we used when measuring our scenarios, but to make you aware of those parameters used in our configuration. When tuning your individual systems, it is important to begin with a baseline, monitor the performance metrics to determine if any parameters should be changed and, when a change is made, monitor the performance metrics to determine the effectiveness of the change.
Details of the Tuning Guide for Quickr 8.1 Services for Domino are available here.

</center

Still running Lotus Quickr 8.0 on Domino 7.0.x? If so, be careful about upgrading your underlying Domino install to 7.0.4 as the support position varies according to the platform you're running on:
Question
Is Lotus Quickr services for Lotus Domino supported for Lotus Domino 7.0.4? What about Lotus QuickPlace?

Answer
Supportability varies by platform.

For Microsoft Windows, Lotus Quickr 8.0.0.2 is not supported, and should not be installed, on a Domino 7.0.4 server; instability and crashes will occur. The last release of Lotus Quickr supported on Domino 7.x was Lotus Quickr 8.0.0.2 installed on Domino 7.0.3. Although Lotus Quickr cannot be installed on a Domino 7.0.4 server, Quickr can still operate and communicate with a Domino 7.0.4 server.

Customers have the following options:

    * Install and run Quickr 8.0.0.2 on a Domino 7.0.3 server. It will interoperate successfully with Domino 7.0.4 servers. This option is best if a fix in Domino 7.0.4 is not critical for the server running Lotus Quickr.
    * Upgrade the server running Quickr to Quickr 8.1 and Domino 8.0.x. This system will interoperate successfully with the other Domino 7.0.4 systems.
    * Customers who cannot upgrade to Quickr 8.1/Domino 8.0.x, yet have a need for a critical fix, can contact IBM Support to request that a hotfix (test fix) be built for their Domino 7.0.3 environment.

For AIX and Solaris, Lotus Quickr 8.0.0.2 on Domino 7.0.4 has been tested and is a supported configuration.

For i5/OS, Lotus Quickr 8.0.0.2 on Domino 7.0.4 is supported once you apply the enabling fix. For details, refer to "About 'Lotus Quickr 8.0.0.2 i5/OS Enabling Fix for Domino 7.0.x'" (#1285465 ).
My advice?

Ignore Domino 7.0.4 for your Quickr server unless you have a very specific support position that requires it.

If the majority of your Domino infrastructure has already been upgraded to Domino 8.0.x, then get Quickr upgraded to 8.1 running on Domino 8.0.2, rather than worrying about Domino 7.0.4. If your infrastructure is still primarily 7.0.x or 8.5-based, then I would recommend waiting for Quickr 8.2 which is due to ship in the next few months. Quickr 8.2 will run on Domino 8.5, so this is the more strategic position going forward.

</center

Do your users access collaboration services via Websphere Portal?

If so, you'll have a number of options for integrating Lotus Quickr resources within your environment. One of the most straightforward methods is to use Portlet Factory, and this developerWorks whitepaper describes the process well:
Integrating IBM Lotus Quickr with IBM WebSphere Portal using IBM WebSphere Portlet Factory

Level: Intermediate

Robert E. Loredo (loredo@us.ibm.com), Software Engineer, IBM Software Group, IBM
Shiva Nistala (shivan@us.ibm.com), Advisory Software Engineer, IBM

07 Apr 2009

Learn how to integrate IBM Lotus Quickr Web 2.0 services with IBM WebSphere Portal applications, creating list and detail portlets that allow you not only to browse all the contents of a Lotus Quickr Library but also to allow access to the contents of a document.

With the recent developments in Web 2.0, businesses are quickly realizing the potential benefits of using collaboration software such as wikis, team collaboration programs, and forums. It has become imperative to provide a mechanism for users to collaborate at different levels.

Existing WebSphere Portal users can quickly take advantage of these new modes of collaboration by using custom integration portlets. This article explains a method for integrating WebSphere Portal applications by using Lotus Quickr Web 2.0 services. We include a working example that can give immediate benefits to your customers.

</center
